Mold and Mildew Removal Tips

What Causes Mold and Mildew to Develop and Prevention

Mold and mildew removal is important because it can cause severe damage to your home and your health. It can also grow very quickly. If you think mold is making you sick, you should have it tested. Mildew and mold can develop in your kitchen, bathroom, basement and walls. It can even get under your foundation. It can be expensive to remove, but even more expensive not to remove. However, you can get rid of it and keep it from returning.

Mildew prevention is fairly easy. The first thing you should do is to make sure that you have a clean environment. Having a clean environment means that you will get rid of all of the excess organic material. This includes cleaning off your shower curtains on a regular basis, and also cleaning your tile and grout. Make sure to wash your laundry as soon as it gets dirty and not leave it piled up to accumulate mildew. Also, you want to make your home a little bit dryer. Mildew will only grow if the conditions for it are perfect. These conditions include the right temperature and the perfect level of humidity. If you cook, clean laundry, or take showers, you could be releasing 3 to 5 gallons of extra water into your air every day. The good news is you can reduce the humidity in your home a few different ways with out having to bathe less frequently.

One way you can do mildew and mold removal is by airing out your home. This works great when the air outside is a lot drier than the air inside. Dry outside air will come through your house and pick up extra moisture and then leave. The result is that the moisture level in your home will decrease. You can do this a lot faster by using high-powered fans to move air and out of your home. This is what a lot of people do in situations that follow their basement flooding or natural disasters such as a hurricane.

Another thing you can do for mildew removal or mold removal is to use your air conditioner. As air cools, it can’t hold as much moisture as warm air. As a result, the moisture in the air will condense, and you’ll have less humidity to deal with in your home.

If you are doing with areas of your home such as the basement or bathroom, it may be more practical to use a dehumidifier than an air conditioner. Most dehumidifiers work in the same way as air conditioning units. They will remove moisture out of the air and then return the air to its original temperature before expelling it. You can actually get a dehumidifier and set it so that you can control the level of humidity in your home. If you have reoccurring problems with mold and mildew removal, this may be one of the best ways in which you can do it.

There are essentially three different types of mildew. Powdery mildew and downy mildew, are the first two types  that grow mostly outdoors. The third type of mildew grows inside of your home. It can also be referred to as mold because it is by product of the same fungus that causes mold. Mildew removal is necessary, especially if mildew has had a good opportunity to develop in damp, dry, and warm conditions. Mold removal is necessary in damp condition as well. One of the best ways to get rid of mold and mildew is to use a dehumidifier.

By installing a hydrometer in your home, you can determine the level of humidity. You want to always keep the level of humidity below 50%. This will help prevent the rapid growth of mold and mildew in your home. Mold can typically grow under slightly colder condition than mildew. Even though there are several different types of mold, mildew favors warm conditions where most other types of household mold favor cool conditions. Mildew can grow on almost any surface that has an organic component to it, such as clothing, wood, laundry, carpet, tile grout, leather, and even your shower curtains. The good news is that mildew is easy to prevent and also fairly easy to get rid of.

Mold Removal and Mildew Removers

There are several different kinds of mold and mildew removers you can use. The type of mold and mildew remover you want to use depends a lot on what you are actually ridding it from. There is an extensive list below of different items from which you may be interested and removing mold and mildew from.

Mildew Removal from Bathroom Shower Curtains

If you are removing mildew from a shower curtain, you should take the shower curtains off of the hooks, and soak them in a very diluted concentration of bleach and warm water. You should use about 1/2 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Allow the shower curtains to soak for up to 30 minutes. This should remove mildew. Then wipe them off with a damp sponge and rinse them off with water.

If they only have a little bit of mildew on them, you can just clean them with a diluted concentration of vinegar and wipe them off with a sponge.

Remove Mildew from Clothes and Fabrics

As soon as you notice any type of problems with clothing and fabrics, it is a really good idea to start at once to remove mildew as soon as you can. By doing this quickly, you can reduce the damage that it can cause. Not removing mildew not only causes clothes to smell bad, but it can also discolor them and eventually cause them to rot if it has time to eat up the fabric. If you are dealing with laundry that is white or towels, you can typically get rid of the mildew very quickly by washing your clothes and adding a little bit of bleach to the load. Bleach is an effective mildew remover because it kills the fungus that causes mildew to occur. Another effective cleaning method that works with almost any type of mildew, is to just take it out and let it dry in the sun. The sun helps to kill the mold and the fungus and also get rid of the mildew smell.

If you have laundry that can be discolored or ruined by the bleach, consider using an oxidized bleach or a bleach with color guard in it for mold removal. If you are unsure whether or not it will damage your laundry, it is best to test it out with a little bit of laundry at a time to make sure that you are not going to ruin it. Another solution, is to use a weaker cleaning chemical such as vinegar. The vinegar will also disinfect and kill the mildew, but it will not do it quite as quickly as the bleach. So you may need to soak it for a half an hour in the washer before you start it. Be extremely careful with clothes that are delicate, and items such as spandex and silk, that cannot tolerate bleach. With these items, you may be better off using a little bit of soap and water and washing them out by hand.

Mildew Removal from Leather Items Such as Gloves and Shoes

With leather items, you do not want to use bleach as a mold and mildew remover. This is because bleach will damage the fabric. Rather, you can use a little bit of diluted alcohol to help you get rid of the mildew stains. You can also try using regular soap and water. If you are having a problem with leather shoes, and you wish to do mildew removal, you should clean them off with soap and a sponge, and then dry them and polish them. The polished layer will help protect them from future mold and mildew infestations. If your shoes are a bit smelly, it may be due to the same fungus that causes mildew to occur. If this is the case, you may need to do mildew removal In order to treat this, by a special shoe fungicide and spray your shoes out for two or three consecutive days. Also make sure to wash your socks in bleach to help get rid of the fungus. This will help you out a ton.

Mildew Stain Removal from Mattresses and Upholstery

If you are trying to do mildew stain removal for your carpets, mattresses, or upholstery, the easiest way to do this is to dry them out as soon as possible. If you can, move your mattress and upholstery into direct sunlight. This will not only dry out your mattress, but it will also start to kill the fungus and also help you to remove the odor and stain. Once it is dry, you want to take a brush and scrub off all of the mildew or mold spots as quickly as you can. This should help you get rid of the mildew stains. It also benefits to do this outside, because these spores can be airborne.

The next thing you can do for mildew removal and mold removal, is to clean it off with denatured alcohol. This can help to disinfect and kill the fungus that are there. Something that my wife and I do very often, to get rid of smells on our children’s mattresses, is to leave them out in the sun and also put baking soda on top of them. Let the baking soda soak up the smell for a few hours, and then vacuum it off. You can also use baby powder to help you do the same thing or even cornstarch. But I think the fastest way to get rid of smells and stains is to leave your mattress out in the sunlight for five or six hours. If you have fragile upholstery, you want to be careful that you do not use too much water to clean with. Also, you want to test a small area to make sure that when you’re cleaning with alcohol, you are not going to be damaging any of the fabric. As far as mold and mildew removal from carpets go, you can also use baking soda and rub it into the carpets and then vacuum it up. You can also use a carpet cleaner with a small amount of diluted bleach to clean and disinfect your carpets and to help you get rid of the fungus.

Mold Problems And How It Can Affect Your Internet Connection

I have talked to you at great length about mold and mildew, and the different ways it can affect your home. But the other day, I was talking to a friend, and she told me about her latest problem with mold. I have learned that mold and mildew can affect your internet connection too!

Now you may be thinking that it is impossible, and that I am exaggerating. But not really. Mold and mildew can affect almost anything, as long as the conditions are favorable for its growth and survival. In the case of my friend, she did not even know that there was a mold problem present in her home. The problem started out when she kept having problems connecting with the Internet. It was an on-and-off type of thing, which she just ignored and blamed on the internet provider. As time went by, the problem got worse, that it became a big issue for her. So she contacted the internet company to send a technician to come in and fix her internet connection problems. So when the technician came to check the cable lines and make sure that everything was in proper order, the real culprit was discovered. And guess what the real culprit was! The technician discovered that mold was thriving inside the internet splitter box. That one little detail was what caused my friend’s internet connetion problems. Because the interior of the splitter box was dark and cool, it was a favorable place for the mold to thrive in.

So if you are having trouble connecting with the Internet for no apparent reason, then it might be because you are having the same issue that my friend had. So it is definitely worth it to check your internet connection lines and accessories from time to time, and see if there’s mold and mildew growing there. If your home has recurring problems with mold and mildew, then it is also likely that you might develop internet problems caused by mold.

However, checking regularly is not enough to stop mold and mildew altogether. What you need is preventive measures to keep the build-up of mold and mildew at bay. Since mold and mildew like to dwell in cool, dark and moist areas, you need to reverse these conditions in order to prevent the mold and mildew from growing. One of the best things you can do is to open doors and windows to let the sunlight enter your home, and allow the air to circulate. Stagnant air also contributes to mold and mildew development. Another thing you can do is to fix any leaks and plumbing problems right away. Don’t let these leaks continue for far too long. Keep all areas of your house dry, especially the bathroom, the kitchen or the basement. Turning on the fan after your daily shower is a good way to keep your bathroom dry. Don’t let your clothes sit in the laundry basket or in the washer for a prolonged period of time. Wash your clothes regularly and always keep them dry. If you have done all these measures, and still mold and mildew keep coming back, it may be best to get a dehumidifier to extract the moisture out of the air, or contact a mold and mildew expert to do the mold and mildew removal for you.

Always remember, having a mold-free and mildew-free home will make your home last long, and will make it a safe, healthy and secure place to live in.

Learn How To Remove Mildew From Walls

Recently, I experienced a problem with mildew on my walls and on my ceiling. It started to grow just above my bathroom shower. It started as little tiny spots that grew outward from the center. I was wondering what caused these to grow, and I decided to get rid of them first and then ask the questions later on.

Removing Mildew From Walls

Removing mildew from walls is easy.  Even if you have never learned how to remove mildew from walls before, it isn’t that difficult to do. The first thing you need to do is have a diluted concentration of bleach in a bottle. You want dilute it down to one part bleach to 10 parts water. Then, you want to spray it on your walls and allow it to sit and soak in for about 10 minutes. Then, take a rag and scrub the mildew off.  If you are dealing with severe mildew that occupies more than 10 ft.² of your bathroom, you will probably want to wear a breathing mask while you work.  If you have more than 25 to 50 ft.² of mold or mildew in your home, you should consider consulting with a professional company to come in and take care of the mold problem for you. It can be very difficult (and even dangerous) for you to take care of the problem on your own.  Also make sure that you have the door to the bathroom open, and the fan on in order to have proper ventilation.

How To Prevent Mildew From Growing On Your Walls

I found out that it was really easy to prevent mildew from growing, at least in my house. The only thing that I needed to do was to make sure to have the bathroom fan on while I took a shower. When I did this, it stopped the mildew from growing. The reason why it grew there in the first place was because when the steam built up in the bathroom, it condensed on the ceilings and on the walls.  This allowed the mildew to grow there very quickly.

How To Do Mold And Mildew Removal When You Have It On Your Walls

One of the most important places to get rid of mold and mildew, it is when you have it on your drywall. Mold has a tendency to eat the cellulose that is found in the drywall. When it first starts, it doesn’t have very deep roots, but over time mold and mildew can develop pretty deep roots that actually eat away at the drywall. Once this happens, your drywall is going to need to be torn out and replaced.

If it is just starting to grow, you can use a mold and mildew remover like Lysol to help take care of the problem. All you need to do it is spray it on and leave it alone for 15 minutes. This way, it will have a chance to disinfect and to kill all of the mildew and mold spores. After that, you want to wipe the wall clean. Make sure to not only clean the area where you see mold, but also clean the area around it, to prevent mold from growing in those spots as well.  After you have cleaned all of the mold off, make sure to dry it off so that it doesn’t attract more mold later on.

If you want to keep from having to to do mold and mildew removal later on, you can paint your drywall with a mold resistant primer. There is a primer called “Kilz” that does a pretty good job at coating the wall and keeping them protected from mildew and mold development. The best thing that you can do is to find a primer to your drywall and then paint over it. This is easier than trying to replace your drywall and start from scratch. If for some reason, the mold and mildew comes right back after you have repainted it, then you may have to think about your drywall anyway. Or, you could just try applying one more coat of the primer to your walls.

Why Would You Want To Use A Mildew Remover When You Are Tile Cleaning?

There are a lot of different ways that you can go about cleaning your tiles. Unless you are a nut about cleaning, you probably view tile cleaning as more of a chore than as a recreational activity. That is okay. The purpose of this article isn’t to make tile cleaning super fun, but it is to help you to be able to clean your tiles more effectively so that you can do a better job and spend less time when you clean them.

If you have never heard about tile cleaning with a steam cleaner, you are definitely missing out. I recommend that you use a steam cleaner for indoor tile and grout, and a pressure washer for removing dirt and germs from exterior grout and tile. Using a steam cleaner for interior cleaning will make your job a lot easier to do.

The great news about a steam cleaner is that it has very good penetration. It uses superheated water and low pressure to penetrate deeply into the grout and remove grout stains. The end result is that it will leave your tiles cleaner and more germ-free that you have probably ever had them in the past. Not only that, a steam cleaner works great as a mold and mildew remover also. If you have mold or mildew in your tile grout, or on your drywall, you can kill it just by running a steam cleaner over it and then wiping it up. Since the steam cleaner can heat water up to temperatures close to 300°F, it is no wonder that a steam cleaner can quickly kill unwanted mold and mildew.

After you clean your tiles with a steam cleaner, they are probably going to be clean enough for you to apply a grout sealer. It is recommended that you seal your grout every 6 to 8 months for optimal results. Sealing grout will also keep you from having to clean your tiles as often, and it will also keep your tiles and grout from becoming stained.
