How to Prevent Mildew and Keep Mildew from Coming into Your Home

mold and mildew removalThere are several things you can do to prevent mildew problems and keep mildew from coming into your home. It is important to remove mold and mildew because this can pose as a health hazard especially to children and elderly people. If you have an existing respiratory problem such as the flu or asthma, mold and mildew spores can actually aggravate your existing health condition.

One of the things that you can do is to make sure that you do not have any water leaks in your home. Sometimes water leaks such as leaking plumbing, or leaking roofs, can cause mold and mildew to develop quite quickly. Also, make sure you do not have water come into your basement. If you do, you could have recurring problems with mold and mildew. One property that I owned had a crack in the foundation. And every time that it rained in the spring, it would flood the basement. We took the walls apart and repaired the cracks, and then we had a lot less problems with flooding down in the basement, and a lot less problem with mold and mildew.

Dehumidifiers Help Keep Mildew Away

Another way to help keep mildew out of your home is to get a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers are not that expensive. You can buy entry-level units on mildew removalAmazon for around 50 bucks. If you get a dehumidifier and set it up properly, you can help drastically reduce the humidity level in your home. By not having a high level of humidity, you can prevent mold and mildew from developing. Also, a dehumidifier will help get rid of extra moisture. A third thing that you can do is to make sure to keep fans running in your bathroom after you have taken a shower. Sometimes the moisture in the air can become trapped in the bathroom if the door is closed and the extra moisture will cause mildew and mold to develop very quickly. By allowing the fans to run for 15 minutes after you have finished your shower, you will be able to get rid of most of the extra humidity that is in the bathroom. Also, leave the bathroom door open after you’re finished showering so that you can get rid of the concentrated moisture. If you can keep the humidity down, you can keep the mold and mildew from developing.

Another thing that you can do is to increase the amount of light or sunlight in your home because sunlight kills mildew. You can do this by installing a skylight in your bathroom. Mold and mildew like to develop in the dark. If you install a skylight, you will have a lot more sunlight and you will keep these problems from developing. Also, do not leave wet laundry around the house, or in your washing machine. Change it out as quickly as you can. If you do this, you will be able to eliminate the mildew from your home and you will not have to worry about mold and mildew removal.
